French authorities cancel Olympic torch relay due to unrest in New Caledonia
The path of the Olympic flamewas twelve thousand kilometers, it was to be carried through four hundred cities and delivered to Paris on the twenty-sixth of July. However, by decision of the French government and New Caledonian deputies, it was decided to cancel the relay due to the unrest that has engulfed French territories over the past few weeks.
Gabriel Ottal, who holds the post of Prime Minister in France, declared a state of emergency in New Caledonia, and Paris sent soldiers there to urgently restore order. The indigenous population of the island, the Kanaks, thus defend the independence of New Caledonia, and peaceful demonstrations quickly develop into mass pogroms. French authorities want to give voting rights to Europeans on the island who have lived here for more than ten years.
