Description
The Stade Vélodrome de l’Orange in Marseille is an important sporting venue in France and the home of Olympique Marseille. The largest club football stadium in the country, the stadium has a rich history of hosting international competitions, including the 1938 and 1998 FIFA World Cups and the 1960, 1984 and 2016 UEFA European Championships.
Originally conceived as a multi-purpose venue, the Stade Vélodrome is now used primarily for football matches. However, it also hosts matches of the French national rugby union team and concerts by renowned artists. Infrastructure changes, such as the replacement of cycle paths with stands in the 1980s, have contributed to the stadium’s transformation into a modern sports facility.
The stadium has had a complicated history with Olympique Marseille, with changes in management and ownership. Currently, the Orange Velodrome remains the property of the Municipality of Marseille, which underlines its importance for the city and its residents.
